The National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) is pleased to see that the FY 2027 House Agriculture Appropriations bill provides $1 million to support the oversight of imported dogs. This critical funding will support U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) efforts to better protect animal and public health and reduce the potential spread of zoonotic pests and disease, such as the northward advancement of New World Screwworm (NWS). These resources are essential to bolster USDA’s actions to prevent the transmission of diseases, parasites, and pests into the United States. NAIA applauds the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee for including this funding in the bill and will continue efforts to ensure that the federal agencies tasked with safeguarding animal and public health are provided adequate resources to protect our country. NAIA also urges Congress to pass the Healthy Dog Importation Act, included in the House Farm Bill, which will establish commonsense health requirements for dogs imported into the United States.
