NAIA Develops Pet Adoption Initiative for Former Research Animals

National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) welcomes Kelli Brisby, NAIA’s very first Director of Development! Kelli joins NAIA at an exciting time as the organization prepares to launch its latest initiative, Homes for Animal Heroes (HAH) - a rehoming program that places adoptable research dogs into permanent, loving homes.
Kelli has nearly a decade of development and fundraising experience with 501(c)(3) non-profits, specializing in grassroots organizations. She graduated from West Virginia University’s School of Journalism, where she studied Advertising and English Literature. Kelli began her non-profit career as the founder and president of a peer-focused, mental health awareness organization. Since then, she has planned and coordinated several fundraising campaigns, and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for philanthropic causes supporting education, homelessness, literacy, suicide prevention, cancer research, prenatal research, and animal welfare. Kelli will leverage her collaborative relationships with medical and scientific organizations to engage the public in factual and thoughtful discussions about the role of animals in biomedical discovery and promote the continued expansion of the HAH network, nationally.
Homes for Animal Heroes will partner with research groups and other animal care professionals to establish a comprehensive training and rehoming service for former study animals that features lifelong support for successful integration into residential living, making HAH unlike any other national organization in the world. Notably, HAH will also provide a critical platform for transparency, education and open dialogue with the biomedical research community about the contributions of study animals to human and animal health, and how they are cared for in research settings.

Animal lovers all over the world have been deliberately misinformed about the realities of biomedical research with animals. Many have been persuaded to believe that the cures, treatments and diagnostics we continue to demand are possible without animal studies, and this is not true yet. This mindset is unkind, unloving, and dangerous to human and animal well-being. And it is an unforgivable dishonor to the animals who have lost their lives for us and our loved ones. Research animals should be revered, not dismissed. They are heroes to all of us, including our pets. They deserve our gratitude. They deserve our respect.
